L.E.A.P. Coat Drive: Donations Wanted!

October 14, 2020 - December 6, 2020

L.E.A.P. is currently accepting donations of new and gently used winter coats of all sizes for children and adults.  This annual Coat Drive will provide vital winter coats for individuals in Washington County.

The average temperature for winter months in Washington County is 36° in December, 31° in January, and 34° in February.  This puts individuals in our area at extreme risk without suitable winter clothing.  Winter months in our area already put an economic strain on families due to heating costs, and we know that the COVID 19 pandemic has impacted many families by the loss of employment.  Our most vulnerable community members are now at increased risk, and many more of our neighbors may be faced with the difficult decision of whether to purchase food or medicine, pay utility bills, or buy seasonal clothing for growing children.

In 2019, 16.1% of children under age 18 in Washington County lived in poverty.  According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children are more susceptible to temperature extremes because they are less able to regulate their body temperature.  As a result, children are more likely to develop significant health effects including hypothermia and even death.  For a child, a winter coat is about more than just safety; it is about being comfortable while waiting for the school bus, the confidence that their clothing is in good condition and fits properly, and the ability to safely join their peers for outdoor activities so they can be successful in school, recreational, and social settings.

Coats are needed for children and adults of all ages and sizes.  More than 25 million Americans ages 60+ were living at or below the federal poverty level before the pandemic, including 7.8% of seniors in Washington County.  Cold weather puts increased stress on the heart by working harder to ensure that the body stays warm.  In fact, a 2015 study by Bian Liu, Phd, of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Institute for Translational Epidemiology found up to a 31% increase in heart attacks in the coldest months of the year.  Seniors that lack sufficient winter clothing may also be reluctant to leave the house for essential items such as prescription drugs.

L.E.A.P. appreciates the support of our community for this important program, including our partner Aroxy Cleaners who has generously committed to dry-cleaning all donated children’s coats during the month of October.  New and gently used winter coats will be accepted at five L.E.A.P. sites as well as at upcoming events.  For more information please see the attached flyer or contact Outreach and Development Coordinator Jennifer Frigolette at (518) 746-2194 or [email protected]
