The Lead Teacher is directly responsible to the Education Coordinator and ensures that the classroom is in compliance with the Performance Standards and with the L.E.A.P. Head Start/Early Head Start Comprehensive Program Plan.  It is the understanding and expectation of this organization that all employees will take the opportunity to contribute to the overall success and mission of the agency above and beyond the basic requirements of their job.

Salary: $16.52/hr.     Weeks Per Year: 44      Hours Per Week: 35

Work Weeks Per Year:  44 Classification:  Non-Exempt

  • Adhere to the agency’s policy on confidentiality both within the agency and the community and adhere to all program policies and procedures.
  • Work closely with all program staff to ensure an integrated approach and provide comprehensive services to children and families.
  • Assist in supervising, providing ongoing training, and evaluating the Assistant Teacher and Teacher’s Aide, Substitutes and Volunteers.
  • Provide a safe and healthy social, emotional, and physical environment for children and be responsive to individual children’s strengths, interests and needs.
  • Promote and support the program’s School Readiness goals and the Parent, Family, and Community Engagement (PFCE) goals.
  • Communicate appropriately with children and families.
  • Develop individual and weekly activity plans.
  • Maintain up to date educational records for each child including ongoing observation records (anecdotal), assessments and progress reports.
  • Use developmentally appropriate classroom management techniques and strategies that do not take away from learning time.
  • Assist children in problem solving techniques.
  • Provide a classroom climate that fosters children’s autonomy, independence and leadership skills.
  • Provide use of instructional discussions and activities to promote children’s higher-order thinking skills and cognition; focusing on understanding rather than rote instruction.
  • Provide feedback to children that expand learning and understanding and encourages continued participation.
  • Plan and implement various school readiness strategies to engage and develop partnerships with parents.
  • Make home visits/parent contacts.
  • Utilize professional reading, writing and communication skills in order to carry out necessary job requirements.
  • Integrate the educational aspects of all Head Start/Early Head Start areas into the daily educational program.
  • Assess the overall progress and needs of the program.
  • Attend staff meetings, appropriate center team planning sessions, case conferences, committee meetings and all appropriate training some of which may require out of the county travel and evening/overnight attendance.
  • Maintain all applicable licenses, certifications and credentials.

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education (or a baccalaureate or advanced degree in any subject, and coursework equivalent to a major relating to ECE with experience teaching preschool-age children).
  • Minimum of two years experience working with young children, preferably in a preschool setting.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • An understanding of young children and low-income families, and an appreciation of parents as the primary educators of their children.
